Margot Goldberg:

Margot Cohen Goldberg was born in the western German town of Dusseldorf, home to a large extended family that had lived in Germany for centuries. Margot lived an idyllic childhood until the Nazis rose to power. Margot vividly remembers the horrors of Kristallnacht, when the Nazis stormed into her home, demolishing furniture, shattering heirloom china, and arresting her father, who was taken to a concentration camp.

Kristallnacht underscored the enormity of the Jews' situation. Although Margot's parents had obtained exit visas, the obstacles to leaving became insurmountable. Unable to escape themselves, they were able to find space for Margot on the kindertransport, the English initiative that saved 10,000 Jewish children from deportation to concentration camps. Margot's father took her to the train station to say goodbye. She never saw him, her mother, or most of the members of her family again.

Sent to an industrial area in the center of England, Margot's nightmare was just beginning. Bounced from household to household, Margot endured and overcame a new set of challenges, finally learning at the end of the war that her parents had perished in concentration camps. After spending a few years working with the U.S. Army in Berlin, she immigrated to the United States where she married, raised a family, and launched a career as a financial executive.
