How bad news can help your day go better

Even a cursory glance at the headlines on any given day will reveal the terrible news that is constantly bombarding us from all sides. It’s hard to read or watch the news without being confronted with bad news -

It leads us to thoughts of how bad the world is and that it’s only getting worse. Yet when you stop to think about it for a minute, the bad news itself should help brighten your day.

Think about it: Why does bad news sell? Because it is irregular. The headlines are always things that don’t often occur; that’s why it’s news.

If good news dominated the headlines, that would be a cause for concern.

We all experience some degree of challenge and hardship. Some more than others. But one thing is certain; the things that are most important and integral to life are most abundant and easily attainable. On the simplest level, the one thing that we need most in order to live - that we can’t survive more than a few seconds without - is air. And air is everywhere... and free.

We tend to beat ourselves up when we make a mistake. In truth, the fact that we notice the mistake at all, is a great sign! It means that most of the time we live higher; it’s only on occasion that we fall.

So the next time you see a negative headline, or experience a negative thought, stop and remind yourself what it means: more often than not, things are good!
